Lydie joined Pekin & Pekin in 2008 as an international trainee, working on M&A deals.  After leaving Pekin & Pekin, Lydie will returned to London to continue her career with Berwin Leighton Paisner. We wish her the best of luck!

During the year I undertook the Graduate Diploma in Law, I realised that the one thing I was missing was a tangible work experience placement within my chosen field of Corporate Law. I decided to apply to Pekin & Pekin for a number of reasons. The first being that the Firm is the leading corporate firm and an internationally recognised law firm in Turkey, and the second being its location in the successful emerging market that is Turkey.

The work has proved challenging in many ways. The general context of work differs slightly in regards to an internship undertaken in the UK. While many of my peers in law school have often joked that the first nine months of an internship consist of making tea for the partners and being the office photocopier, I have found my experience in Pekin & Pekin to be anything but. I began my internship in the M&A team headed by Ayça Sevimay. From the beginning I was given relevant work to do and was left to use my own initiative to complete the work. In the last few months of the internship, I have been able to consolidate the knowledge I have gained and will be well prepared for my training contract in Berwin Leighton Paisner, as well as for my final academic year in the Legal Practice Course.

The expertise and size of Pekin & Pekin were also of great influence during my application process. The Firm has a reputation for varied and challenging work and, when I visited the offices, I realised that it provides an environment where I would gain broad experience. The office provides a small and succinct work environment and there is extensive interaction between the lawyers. That this Firm is in Berwin Leighton Paisner’s preferred firm network has meant that I am now experienced in approaching international work and the interaction between the two firms has left me optimistic that, after the end of my internship, I will be able to maintain a material working relationship with Pekin & Pekin.
