Date: 24 July 2009 This month saw the inaugural Lex Mundi International Tax Practice Group Europe/Middle East/Africa meeting. Held in Amsterdam the meeting gathered leading Tax partners from the global network to discuss the local tax regimes, corporate migration and how to combat tax losses. Ideas were exchanged and knowledge shared by the 24 member firms representing 19 jurisdictions that attended the meeting. Conference sessions: Session 1: Current Tax Structures: Europe/ Middle East/ Africa and Asia/ Pacific Session 2: Corporate Migration - Techniques and Tax Considerations Session 3: How to Preserve Tax Losses and Any Other Tax Attributes During Turbulent Times Ali Şanver represented Turkey, illustrating the most favourable tax structures across Europe and demonstrating the effects of double taxation treaties to which Turkey is a party. A focus point was the treatment of withholding tax under the different treaty provisions, and the impacts on dividend distribution, interest rates and capital gains.
