Following prolonged discussions, the Turkish Grand National Assembly enacted a law approving Turkey's signing and ratifying of the Kyoto Protocol for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, an international environmental treaty produced at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, 17 February 2009.

This treaty includes provisions as to the achievement of "the stabilisation of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system".
